Ever since I was a young boy…

The Who

Pinball Wizard

I’m in the process of cleaning up my room, and have decided to sort through the few drawers of cassettes in my closet.  As I started to sort them I thought, “hey, this would make a funny blog post.”  This is a list of some of the more interesting items among my tape collection.  A few caveats/rules:

1) I don’t plan to mention many mixtapes, this will mainly be commercially produced tapes.

2) Many of these tapes were purchased by my parents and then passed on to me.

3) The contents of this list cannot be used against me in any way!

Now the list:

Modern English: After the Snow – About a year ago I purchased this album on CD because I read somewhere that it was great.  LIttle did I know that someone in my family had previously loved it enough to buy it on tape.  I will have to do more research to find out where it came from.

Phil Collins: Face Value – You will remember my previous take on this album on a podcast.  This was one of my parent’s before it was mine, and my love for Mr. Collins clearly came from them.

Original Cast Recording: The Who’s Tommy – My love for musical theatre is unknown on this blog, but as a child/teen I participated in many a musical.  Oh the memories.

Field of Dreams Soundtrack – I love this movie. It’s got baseball, magic, and the source material was written by W.P. Kinsella whose work has been discussed on the blog.  The instrumental music on this tape was a favourite of mine in years past.  I remember pulling out my old yellow walkman ripoff and spending hours listening.

Third Eye Blind: Third Eye Blind – This was the first tape I ever purchased with my own money. I picked it up in Cleveland Ohio during a trip with my family.  I listened to it the whole way home and could still sing along with every single song.

Stone Temple Pilots: Core – I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to this tape. I can’t remember.  I think I may have purchased it at the Garage Sale Store on Concession St. here in Hamilton.

Robert Munsch: Love You Forever – Hnds down my favourite Munsch story of all time. I heard recently that he has been sick and unable to write new stories. That makes me sad.  It’s interesting to note that he is credited as “Bob” Munsch on the cover of the tape.

Personalized Name Tunes: Peter – I remember listening to the various songs with my name in them as a kid. Hello Song, Good Morning, Rubba Dubba, The Mirror, and Goodbye are all musical classics. I can only imagine the pain of the engineer who had to record the many, many versions of each song for this series.

The Best of the Muppets – This tape includes two songs about Muppets visiting a disco. Wow.

The Untold Legend of Batman – This tape accompanied a comic book, and as I recall essentially read it out. If anyone knows more about this please let me know.

I have many more tapes to go through. I think I will do this again.
